(Thanks to Ashley Merryman, Mark Oswald and Bruce Roehm for taking notes this week since YeEd was recovering from a stroke on Sept. 25^th.  Thankfully it was mild and no serious results!!)

 The Alexandria A Capella Collective meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 2  was at AlexRenew.  Artistic director, Joe Cerutti,led the warm up sessions for both the Harmonizers and Metro Voices ensembles.

 The following announcements and reminders were made by chapter leaders:

Both the Harmonizers and Metro Voices will be singing at Art on the Avenue, Saturday, Oct. 5. Call time is 2 pm inside the Mount Vernon Rec Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave, Alexandria. Performance starts at 3 pm. Uniform is AACC t-shirts.

Next week's rehearsal on Oct. 8 will also be at AlexRenew.

Harmonizers performing at Reagan National Airport for Honor Flights on Oct. 19 will only need to provide their full name and date of birth beforehand to get through security that morning.

The first holiday and combined song everyone rehearsed was “Gloria,” with some members of both ensembles trying out different voice parts.

In addition to Art on the Avenue this weekend, we have committed to doing the Asbury Methodist Village performance on Oct. 27. However, both gigs currently have only a minimum number of singers signed up to attend, so if any of the "maybes" or anyone who has not RSVP'd to either event can make either one, please update your plan on Groupanizer *and* let Terry Reynolds know ASAP (especially for this Saturday's performance).

Membership director, Jacob Broude, welcomed new AACC members, Annie Ermlick to Metro Voices, and Suranjan Sen to the Harmonizers!

Returning guests were Josh Berenhaus, Katie Rainmode, and Rob Santine. First-time guests were Daniel Egger andJacqueline Burke.  Maggie McAlexandrer directed the “Welcome Song” for guests.

After the business session, the Harmonizers started rehearsing some of our returning holiday music from last year, “Let it Snow” and “Deck the Halls.” During this time, Calvin Schnure led sectionals for each voice part on the new Hebrew song, “El Yivneh Hagalil.” Then we spent some time working on “Here Comes Santa Claus” and finished the evening with all parts together on “El Yivneh.”

Metro Voices began their rehearsal with a discussion about the fall show, giving particular kudos to show producer, Catherine LaValley!  Maggie directed their rehearsal which included work on their new audition song, “It’s the Magic that Brings Us Together.”  They concluded their work session with holiday music also. 

After the 50-50 drawing, the combined ensembles sang “Keep the Whole World Singing” directd by Ike Evans.

AACC members did well at the fall Mid Atlantic District (M-AD) contest in York, PA, Sept. 27-28. The quartet contest was won by SECRET BEST FRIENDS with former member, Will Daniel Simmons, as bass. Second place was won by PRAXIS with Lance Fisher and David Breen (they sang an original parody by Lance for the finals). Third place was won by BETTER TOGETHER with Elizabeth and Tony Colosimo, and Heather and Andrew Havens.  

 

Rick Taylor sang with LEGACY; former member Spencer Wight sang with MADHATTAN; Scott Beach and Mike Geipel sang with MENTAL NOTE.

 

PARKSIDE HARMONY won the chorus contest.  Mike Wallen directed The Virginians chorus. 

 

The judging panel included Joe Cerutti, Steve and Renee Tramack.  Tyler Carpenter was a candidate judge at the contest too. 

 

And a huge congratulations to Tony Colosimo who was inducted into the M-AD Hall of Honor at the convention.  

 

Plus congratulations to Dennis Ritchey who retired as events coordinator after years of service in that position at M-AD contests and conventions.  His replacement is fellow chapter member, Ken Rub.

ALL MEMBERS NOTE: The Alexandria Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, October 15, as part or our Tuesday night rehearsal. Rehearsal will begin at 7pm.There will be one item on the agenda: to elect the 2025 Chapter Board of Directors. The slate, as selected by the nominating committee and accepted by the president, is as follows:

The Alexandria A Capella Collective meeting on Tuesday, September 24 was supposed to be a night to sing up and down King Street in Old Town Alexandria. But the rain never let up and so the leadership cancelled the event at 5 pm. (Likely no one else would be around town in the cold damp weather.)

But a few minutes later, artistic director, Joe Cerutti, send an invite via Slack inviting any members to join him, plus Tony Colosimo, Samantha Tramack and Craig Kujawa, to view the documentary, “Join or Die,” playing at Alamo Draft House in Loudon.  His invitation suggested that the topic was about people taking action to join things. His words, “It really provides a sense of identity for organizations like ours and why it’s important for us to continue the work we’re doing.  Duncan Peacock tipped Joe off about this documentary and Joe has seen it twice.  Thus he invited others to check it out too.

In other news from the chapter, word was received that past chapter president,, Bede Bender, died Monday in Florida.  His wife, Mary Kay, was also a leader in the chapter.  Bede joined the chapter in 1978 and was president in 1989. He was 88. More details likely to follow. 

Secondly, best of luck to our chapter quartets that will be competing at the Mid Atlantic District (M-AD) fall convention in York, PA, this weekend. The quartets include MENTAL NOTE with Scott Beach and Mike Geipel; LEGACY with Rick Taylor; PRAXIS with Lance Fisher and David Breen; and BETTER TOGETHER with Elizabeth and Tony Colosimo, and Heather and Andrew Havens.  Several other member will be participating as judges, district officials, back stage crews, and just regular tag singers!

Looking Back on the Sept. 21 , 2024 AACC Fall Show

The Alexandria A Capella Collective (AACC) fall show was at Bishop Ireton High School (BI), 201 Cambridge Rd. in Alexandria at 6 pm on Sat. Sept. 21. The theater venue is quite nice and the seating was great for the significant crowd of friends and patrons who attended.

Theme for this year’s show was Homecoming – an evening with family and friends.

The Harmonizers and Metro Voices ensembles each sang two sets of songs for the show, plus they combined for a fantastic finale set with “Defying Gravity” featuring Samantha Tramack, and “I’m Still Standing.”

Five great chapter-related quartets appeared on this year’s show too and wowed the audience: BETTER TOGETHER includes Elizabeth and Tony Colosimo and Heather and Andrew Havens; MIXTAPE includes Jenni Sheets Parsons, Dayve Gabbard, Brian O’Dell and Cy Wood; PRAXIS includes Kevin Clark, Francesco Logozzo, Lance Fisher and David Breen; PRATT STREET POWER includes Vince Sandroni, Ed Schubel, Ben Hawker and Darren Schmidt; and SWEET AND SOUR includes Christina, Samantha, Mert and Joshua Tramack.

Artistic director, Joe Cerutti, welcomed the audience at 6 pm and introduced performing ensembles during the show. The tech crew was students from the BI theater department and they were great. Show producer was Catherine LaValley.  Also back stage was Greg Tepe and Ian Trent who helped as ‘quartet runner.’  Gary Cregan with DougWhite helped with the riser crew starting at 1:30 when the chapter was admitted into the school. Many members helped haul in risers and our equipment. Tony did the warm ups for the combined ensemble in the school band room.

Volunteer efforts in the lobby included general manager, Susan Fitzpatrick, with Kathy Kauffmann, Naida Harrington, Kitty Fedarko, Ellen Dellert, future member Rob Santine and shows director, Doug White.   This was the first AACC concert for Adele Jones, Ker Medero, and Brenden White.

The Harmonizers performed both of their contest songs from Cleveland including all the staging.  That meant Matt Zagorski  came to help dance for the weekend and Cy Wood took Randall Eliason’s place on the front row since Randall was overseas. The Harmonizers wore their new fifth place medals from Cleveland with the black/gray outfits for the show. The audience was totally wild at the end of “Lullaby” with the trio of Maggie McAlexander, Tessa Walker and Samantha Tramack.

Their sets also included “Sit Down You’re Rockin the Boat” with a solo by Lance Fisher and directed by Tony Colosimo; “But the World Goes Round’ and “Calling Dreams.” 

Metro Voices two sets were really great and well received also by the audience: “Happy Together” and “Sing Swing” which  Maggie directed.  Then “After You Who” and “Wayside.” They wore their combination color outfits for this show.

During the show, Joe enthusiastically promoted the launch of Capital Force – a seasonal youth chorus that will be part of the AACC chapter. The launch event is Sunday, Oct. 6.  Tessa Walker will be the youth chorus director

There was an afterglow party at Astro Beer Hall in Shirlington.  Many members and fans were there for the food and festivities – the Hall offered a couple great special afterglow sandwiches, there was lots of tag singing, and many attendees played pool and other games at the hall. The new AACC t-shirts were the comfortable dress code for the evening.

The Alexandria A Capella Collective meeting on Tuesday, September 10 was at Beth El Synagogue. Next week the AACC singers will meet at Market Square in Old Town Alexandria and sing around the city.

The Harmonizers and Metro Voices ensembles each warmed up separately this week and both rehearsed and prepared for their fall show performances on Sat. Sept. 21, at Bishop Ireton High School.  Call time is 1:30 pm.  Show time is 6 pm.

Holiday music work will begin on Oct. 1 at AlexRenew.

Membership director, Jacob Broude, welcomed our guests this week.  Six were returning guests: Annie Ermlick, Jim Wallace, Lynne Benedict, Katie Raimondo, Katie Rose, and Rob Santine. The members sang the chapter “Welcome Song” for guests.

 

Ian Trent got his new Harmonizer name tag and AACC t-shirt having pass his audition last week.

The Alexandria A Capella Collective meeting on Tuesday, September 10 was at AlexRenew. Even with the election debate that night, there was good attendance of singers and guests.  

 

The Harmonizers and Metro Voices ensembles each warmed up separately this week and both rehearsed until the business meeting and announcements at the end of the night. Directors were excited about how well the show songs are being performed.

Artistic director, Joe Cerutti, made some general announcements: There is just one more rehearsal (after this week) until we start doing only the holiday songs in rehearsals. After the fall show, the first song the Harmonizers will rehearse will be “El Yivneh Hagalil” (the one in Hebrew). The learning schedule for all of the holiday songs will be shared soon.

Next week's rehearsal will be at Beth El. Call time for the fall show will be 1:30 pm at Bishop Ireton High School. The following week (after the show) we will be singing in Old Town.

The two ensembles met together for the 50/50 drawing, then executive director, Stan Quick, conducted the business meeting. He reports that ticket sales for the fall show are going strong and the chapter team will be expanding new channels for selling tickets.

The deadline to sign up for Ireland is Friday, September 13, 2025 as the tour operator will be making the flight arrangements shortly.  Information on the main trip and the optional extension to include Northern Ireland have been sent out to the performing chorus on slack and via email.  Please contact Brad Jones via slack or at bwj.harmonizer@gmail.com if you have any questions. Chapter secretary, Heidi Krukowski, presented membership renewals to the following: Mary Cooper - 2 years; Jeanne Hillinck - 2 years; Elisabeth Cosh - 2 years; Leah Musico - 2 years; and Carl Kauffmann - 52 years.

Membership director, Jacob Broude, welcomed our guests this week.  Seven were returning guests: Annie Ermlick, Jim Wallace, Lynne Benedict, Trudi Gelfand,  Neal Connors, Katie Raimondo, and Ian Trent. First-time guests were Chris, Don and Rob. Maggie McAlexander directed the “Welcome Song” for guests.

 

President Noah Van Gilder presented the second round of the chapter Distinguished Service Awards for 2023.  The Oz Newgard Award for significant contributions to the music program was awarded to Samantha Tramack.  The Chapter Honor Award - for continuous service above and beyond what is expected was awarded to Tessa Walker.  The Chapter Memorial Award given for years of exemplary service to the chapter during his 20 plus years, and the highest award given by the chapter, was awarded to Ken Rub.

  

Catherine LaValley, fall show producer, offered these announcements about the fall show: 

 

1. We are in serious need of volunteers. Please consider asking family members to come help during the show. Guests too!

2. Make sure family and friends are buying tickets. 

3. The afterglow will be informal and held at Astro Brewing Co. in Shirlington. If you are bringing anyone under 21 they must get a wristband. Children (those under ~16 ) are not allowed in the building's basement.

4. We are promoting the show on all of our social media. 

5. Costumes for the fall show will be the same as what each ensemble wore in Cleveland.

Chapter leaders had a last minute plea for help to get more sign-ups for the launch of the Capital Force ensemble. Any help in getting it off the ground is very much appreciated!

The Alexandria A Capella Collective meeting on Tuesday, September 3 was back at AlexRenew. The risers were full with the combined ensembles.  Assistant director for Metro Voices, Maggie McAlexander, managed a great warm up session, used the ‘number’ vocal exercise and the “Gingham Gown” tag  learned last week.  She invited an octet off the risers to sing the tag. 

 

 Artistic director for AACC. Joe Cerutti, recognized Jacob Broude and the music team for hosting a great guest night last week. He was happy to see so many guests back on the risers.

He announced that two free tickets for the Harbor City show featuring FIRST TAKE were available first come – speak to Catherine LaValley.  

The chapter was asked to sing at the City of Alexandria’s First Night on New Years’ Eve, so Joe asked for a show of hands from AACC singers to get a read on how many singers could do a gig late afternoon or early evening.  Response was good, so stay tuned for more details.

Next week’s meeting, Sept. 10 will be at AlexRenew; Sept. 17 at Beth El; and Sept. 24 AACC will sing in Old Town Alexandria.

At this point the two ensembles worked on their own repertoire in preparation for the fall show, Sept. 21, at Bishop Ireton High School, (201 Cambridge Rd, Alexandria) featuring five local area quartets and the two AACC choruses. Theme for the show is Homecoming – an evening with family and friends. The show will run 6-8:15 pm followed by an afterglow. Chorus call will be 1:30 pm at the school.

They remerged to the risers and worked on combined songs with Samantha Tramack, director of Metro Voices, at the helm.

Chapter executive director, Stan Quick held the business session.  As a reminder, the fall show is just 18 days away. The two ensembles are singing really great for the show already. Ticket sales for the show are underway and chapter leaders are eager for ideas on how to reach more potential patrons. 

Show producer, Catherine LaValley, was busy during the rehearsal time to capture video of AACC singers at work preparing for the show – the footage to be used for promotion.  Thus the request for members to wear their AACC t-shirt this week.

Ken Rub is seeking a volunteer to work back stage, with him, at the fall Mid Atlantic District (M-AD) contest in York, PA, Sept. 27 28.  Expenses are covered.  See Ken about this chance to help the M-AD stage crew.

Stan reminded all that volunteers are needed for the fall show. It could be members who are not singing this show, or family members or friend.

Chapter secretary, Heidi Krukowski, presented a membership renewal to brand new member Adele Jones; and a 50-year lapel pin for Rick Savage. (Our chapter has a long tradition of giving a pin for a member who reaches the 50-year point.)

 

A riser crew had put up risers for both ensembles. Tyler Carpenter was prepared to engrave the medals for Harmonizers.

Alan Wile was set up to sell 50/50 tickets without his usual helper, Walt Page, who was in the emergency room on Monday, but is doing better as of Wednesday. Leaders also shared that Charlyne Miller reports that her husband is improving in a hospital in Tuscany, but needs to remain in the hospital a couple more weeks where they were vacationing.  Zag Sandler and his wife were in Portugal for their honeymoon vacation, and he fell and broke a hip. More details to come on his situation.

The AACC holiday show is set for Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 with afternoon show times, at Fairlington United Methodist Church. Work on the music for that show began this week during the ensemble rehearsals.

 

Membership director, Jacob Broude, welcomed six returning guests (Annie Ermlick, Jim Bradford, Lynne Benedicy, Katie Raimonde, Suranjen Sen, and Alessandra Daigneault)  and the AACC chorus sang the chapter “Welcome Song” to them, directed by Terry Reynolds. 

 

President Noah Van Gilder presented the 2023 Chapter Distinguished Awards.  He presented half of the awards this week and will wrap up the presentations next week.  Alan Wile, long-time awards program helper, had ordered the plaques and handed them to recipients as they were announced.

 

The president has the privilege to give Meritorious Service Awards. Noah awarded that award to Patricia Chow for her work to help launch Metro Voices and her contributions in many ways to take care of details for that ensemble.

 

New Note of the Year Award was presented to Maggie McAlexander for her work as a music team member since she joined.

 

The recipient of the Sandy Stamps “Open Arms” Award was given to Mary Cooper who sings with Metro Voices but has been an important member to welcome guests and singers in the larger chapter.

 

Lance Fisher and Sophie Clarke received the Ibbianne & Wilbur Sparks Award as a family unit that has made a difference in the chapter’s music program.

It was guest night for the Alexandria A Capella Collective on Tuesday, August 27, at Beth El synagogue. There were 12 guests with all levels of barbershop and singing experience. 

 

 Membership director, Jacob Broude, had promoted the event, and the music team prepared the Metro Voices and Harmonizers to sing for the guests. Many members brought guests – friends, co-workers, neighbors, relatives, former members, partners, and new acquaintances.  Chapter members wore their new AACC t-shirts. The program was well organized and there was a lot of fun.  The first half-hour of the night was just open for mixing and meeting the guests. 

Associate director of the Harmonizers, Tony Colosimo, did a warm up session for the AACC members and the guests on the risers. He explained, in general terms, the four parts we sing and asked members of each section to raise their hands so the guests could come stand near them if needed.  And he taught the guests the lip-trill exercise.

Assistant director of Metro Voices, Maggie McAlexander, taught a round (“Whose Pigs Are These”) and then taught the tag, “In a gingham gown you stole my heart away.” Then she invited an octet of singers to do it and then she added a guest on each part.  It was great!

A riser crew had started at 5 pm to get the risers from storage and set up at Beth El. There was a display table of chapter history materials, and Alan Wile and Walt Page were set up to sell 50/50 tickets. Tyler Carpenter was prepared to engrave the medals Harmonizers earned in Cleveland. Starting next week, members who want their medal engraved should bring it to him at the meeting and he will bring it back the next week. Cost is $5. 

Terry Reynolds welcomed everyone and extended greetings from artistic director, Joe Cerutti, who was in NYC.  Terry confirmed that tickets for the fall show, Sept. 21, at Bishop Ireton High School, (201 Cambridge Rd, Alexandria) featuring five local area quartets and the two AACC choruses, are now on sale. Theme for the show is Homecoming – an evening with family and friends. The show will run 6-8:15 pm followed by an afterglow. Chorus call will be 1:30 pm at the school.

 

The AACC holiday show is set for Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 with afternoon show times, at Fairlington United Methodist Church. Work on the music for that show will begin soon. The music is on Groupanizer and Joe encourages singers to get started on “Here Comes Santa Claus.”  New members will obviously want to start on other holiday songs.

 

Meetings September 6 and 13 will be at AlexRenew, 1800 Limerick Street, Alexandria. Members are asked to wear their AACC t-shirt again next week for promotional photos. 

 

Following the announcements, the two ensembles rehearsed their music in separate rooms until time for the evening program. Guests were given music to use in each ensemble’s rehearsal.

 

When everyone reassembled in the big hall, guests were invited to take seats and Metro Voices sang “On The Wayside” for them. 

 

While the Harmonizers took their places on the risers, Tessa Walker explained the formation event for Capital Force, our youth ensemble, on Sun. Oct. 6. She encouraged all members to take flyers far and wide to get students (grades 8-12) to register for the kick-off event. 

 

The Harmonizers then sang “Calling Dreams” followed by the combined ensembles singing “I’m Still Standing.”

 

Chapter secretary, Heidi Krukowski, presented membership renewal cards to the following: 2 years to Marsha Ansel; 3 years to David Hillinck; 7 years for Jacob Broude; 33 for Ken Rub; 44 for Dave Ermlick; 45 for Mick Stamps; 50 for Randy Lazear; and 59 for Jack Pitzer. (Hurray – thanks for all the handshakes!). 

 

There are two recent new members that come us as family members of a current singer.  Adele Jones, wife of Brad Jones, is a new bass singer for Metro Voices.  Brenden White is a new lead singer for the Harmonizers.  His dad, Steve, gave him his new membership card and his own AACC t-shirt, and invited Brenden’s Godfather, Rick Savage, to be up front for the presentation.

 

The AACC chorus sang the chapter “Welcome Song” to guests directed by Terry.

 

As a fun wrap-up to the evening, Devin Gerzof invited everyone to form in groups of about 10. Then there was a contest to see how many songs each group could sing that has the word, “Heart.”  Devin went from group to group and after about 5 rounds, only groups 1 and 2 were still in the contest.  Group 2 finally captured the title.  Many guests were the ones who offered or even sang the “heart” song for their group.

 

After the fun ice breaker activity, it was time for a 50/50 drawing and to sing “Keep the Whole World Singing, directed by Tony. There was big crowd at the Harmo House for the pizza and visiting and story-telling and tag singing. It was fun to have many guests there too.

The Alexandria A Capella Collective met on Tuesday, August 20, at Beth El synagogue on Seminary Road. It was another great night with fantastic singing, great recall of contest stage presence plans, several guest singers and fun sectional duets for “I’m Still Standing.”

Next week Tyler Carpenter will resume engraving the medals Harmonizers earned in Cleveland. He gets it done almost while you wait and only costs $5.

Oct. 19; and a show at Asbury Methodist Village on Sunday, Oct.27. Don’t delay signing up.

The business session was brief and Mary Cooper filled in for membership director, Jacob Broude, to introduce guests (Adele Jones, Ian Trent, Neal Connors, Harry Munroe and Trudy Gelfand)! Maggie McAlexander, assistant director of Metro Voices, directed the chapter’s “Welcome Song.” It was good to see Stephen Gudauskas back

 

After business, the combined ensembles worked on “I’m Still Standing” is sectional duets sessions.  Joe and Maggieworked with the AACC leads and tenors; Tony and Samantha Tremack, director of Metro Voices, worked with the basses and baritones.  After a period, the director teams switched to work with the other voices. Then the ensembles combined to sing the song with the new techniques they had learned in the sectionals. 

 

For the rest of the evening, each ensemble worked more on their show music before coming back together for a 50/50 drawing and to sing “Keep the Whole World Singing, directed by Zak Sandler. The usual crowd was at the Harmo House for the pizza and visiting and story-telling and tag singing. It was fun to have our new guests there too.

 

In news outside the chapter meeting: A quartet of Harmonizers sang at the Lee Center in Alexandria on Thursday, Aug. 15, for a group of seniors participating in the Adult Day Care Center program. Carl Kauffmann, EJ Herold, Joel Golden and Cy Shuster sang the gig.  Dean Rust coordinated this community service event but got Covid and Cyfilled in for him as bass.  Dean reports that this community outreach effort helps us earn the arts grant recently received from the city for FY2025. The quartet sang the “National Anthem,” some Pole Cat songs and some Harmonizer standards like “Keep the Whole World Singing” and the “Welcome Song.” They also helped honor the veterans in the audience and shared info about the AACC chapter. As is often the case, the seniors were singing along with the quartet.

The Alexandria A Capella Collective meeting on Tuesday, August 13. at AlexRenew was a busy one with lots of work on songs for the fall show. Tyler Carpenter filled in for Jacob Broude as membership director, and welcome guests. He also was busy engraving the new medals Harmonizer singers earned in Cleveland. (It is a great service - he gets it done almost while you wait and only costs $5.) Plus he was passing out new name tags for all singers with the new logos for the ensembles.

Artistic Director Joe Cerruti, was happy to welcome so many guests back to sing with the choruses. He gave a big plug for the fall show, Sept. 21, at Bishop Ireton High School, (201 Cambridge Rd, Alexandria) featuring five internationally famous quartets and the two AACC choruses. A promotional blitz will happen soon. The show will have an early start so there is time for an afterglow.  There was a straw poll about afterglow attendance so the committee can plan accordingly for space. 

 

For those looking ahead to December, the holiday shows will be Sat. and Sun. Dec. 14 and 15, at Fairlington United Methodist Church.  Those performances will also have an early evening start time.  Joe encouraged singers to work on “Here Comes Santa Claus” to get a head start for that show.

 

Breaking news from Joe was word about the Harmonizers meeting an Honor Flight of Veterans from New York state, Sat., Oct. 19, in the morning. The chorus will sing the “Armed Forces Medley.” EJ Herold is helping coordinate.  (Word was also shared that a new arrangement of that song for the combine ensembles is coming soon.)

 

Remaining rehearsals for August include Aug. 20 at Beth El, and Aug. 27 at Beth El – which is also Guest Night for AACC. All members should invite a prospective singer – maybe even bring the guest to the venue.

Joe also announced two possible shows and asked for a show of hands for how many would likely attend.  There were adequate numbers and parts, so sign ups can begin on Groupanizer for an Arts on the Avenue appearance ,Sat. Oct. 5; and a retirement facility appearance on Sun. Oct. 27. 

 

Chapter education director, Sheryl Berlin, distributed flyers for the kick off of Capital Force the first week in Oct.  The goal is to have 25 students.  The meetings will be at Fairlington Presbyterian Church every other Sunday from 2:30-4:30 until February. Everyone one needs to give this project some attention and push in order to launch. 

 

Chapter secretary, Heidi Krukowski, presented membership renewal cards to the following: Zak Sandler for three years; Scott Beach, 14 years; Frank Fedarko, 22 years; and Terry Reynolds, 41 years. 

 

After business, there was an icebreaker event for members to exchange their favorite Olympic story.  

 

Both ensembles worked more on their show music before coming back together for a 50/50 drawing and to sing “Keep the Whole World Singing, directed by Julian LeFlore. The usual crowd was at the Harmo House for the pizza and visiting and story-telling and tag singing. It was fun to have our new guests there too.

The Alexandria A Capella Collective met on Tuesday, August 6 at our AlexRenew rehearsal space with a large gathering of members and an encouraging number of guests. The evening began with Jason Lee conducting the warm-up and capturing the attention of all with his unique directing style and good humor.

 

Artistic Director Joe Cerruti, freshly returned from his duties at Harmony University (HU) in Denver, began the evening with a discussion of that experience and the many encounters throughout the week with barbershoppers animatedly complimenting the chorus performance in Cleveland! Video of the performance of the Harmonizer set was reportedly referenced in several classes throughout the week leading Joe and Tessa Walker to receive continuous praise for its artistry and creativity all week long. 

 

For background information: Joe was the BHS staffer at HU and he and Tessa were faculty for sessions during the weeklong barbershop school. Lance Fisher and Sofie Clarke also attended as students.  Prior to the start of HU, there was a candidate school for BHS members starting on their three-year trek to become certified judges.  Tyler Carpenter and Terry Reynolds attended as candidates to become admin judges and Maggie McAlexander attended as a candidate in the musicality category.

 

Related to the HU experience, there was a Mid Atlantic District (MAD) Harmony College-East (HCE) in June at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD.  Deans for that school were AACC members, Bill Colosimo and Sheryl Berlin.  Several other members were faculty and several of our quartets were there for coaching help prior to going to Cleveland. The quartets also were part of the great shows each evening of the school. Any members can attend HCE so mark the calendar for June 12-15, 2025, for a terrific opportunity for coaching, classes and barbershop harmony experiences. 

 

Continuing on the chapter meeting report: Joe discussed the fall show (Sep. 2021, at Bishop Ireton High School, 201 Cambridge Rd, Alexandria).  The repertoire for the choruses will feature current music with the addition of five international-qualifying quartets. These quartets (in no particular order) include BETTER TOGETHER (Tony Colossimo, Andrew Haven and their wives); PRAXIS (Lance Fisher and David Breen); SWEET AND SOUR (Samantha and Mert Tramack); MIXTAPE (Cy Wood); and local Baltimore quartet PRATT STREET POWER. 

 

Joe also mentioned that the holiday show will be performed twice (December 14 & 15) in late afternoon performances at Fairlington United Methodist Church (last December’s venue). The earlier time allows for a holiday afterglow for the choruses. 

Rehearsals for August include Aug. 13 at AlexRenew, Aug. 20 at Beth El, and Aug. 27 at Beth El – which is also Guest Night for AACC. All members should invite a prospective singer – maybe even bring them to the venue.

First announcement from membership chair, Jacob Broude, was the creation of specified Slack channels for the sharing of common interests and building community. Becca Williams led an icebreaker where all members mimed their interests to locate their Slack-channel soul mates to predictably comedic effect. 

 

Jacob then announced the approved AACC (Harmonizer, Metro Voices, Capital Force and Vintage Blend) logos and branding color palette. These will be the AACC official identification going forward. although the Alexandria Harmonizer crest (and the 76-year historical record) remains active and the basis upon which we build going forward. 

 

Jacob introduced five returning guests (Brenden White, Adele Jones, Daniel Huitt, Ben Raja, and Josh Berenhaus); and welcomed eight first timers (Scott Dano, Ian Trent, Mallory Waters, Kathryn Martucci, Kyle Shutt, Neal Connors, Suranjan Sen, Shristi Nadkrni, and Spoorthi Nadkarni)! The members enthusiastically rang out the chapter’s “Welcome Song” with Maggie McAlexander’s able direction.

 

After business, the ensembles returned to rehearsal and the Harmonizers watched the video recording of the set from Cleveland. For many it was the first real appreciation for the visual impact of the treble trio and an opportunity to see the performance from the audience perspective. 

 

Joe commented on the shared pride of all the coaches who helped prepare the Harmonizers, to include: Dave Wright, Kevin Keller, Steve Tramack, Cy Wood and Dave McEachern, whose 11^th hour visit in Cleveland put the performers in peak preparation. Another honorable mention, enthusiastically seconded by Cleveland participants, went to Jason Lee for his inspiring warm-ups that really helped mentally prepare the chorus for competition. 

 

He also noted that the AACC is now fully recovered from the COVID period and back to anticipation of future activities to include having already chosen (but not announcing) the competition set for BHS International 2026. In all, an exciting evening of news and anticipation.

 

Following run through of the Cleveland competition set by the Harmonizers, particularly to familiarize those who did not perform in Cleveland, the ensembles rejoined for 50-50 and closed the evening with “Keep the Whole World Singing” led by Kevin  Mendez.

Members of the Alexandria A Cappella Collective (AACC) and a sizable audience at Franconia District Park for the July 24 concert in the amphitheater waited out the light misting rain that started even after the sky seemed to be clear. But it finally stopped and the show went on without a hitch.

A riser crew had set things up and the county sound crew had set up too.  The speakers were taken down during the early rain but when leadership decided it was clear to go, everyone jumped into action. Luckily the Harmo Truck was near the stage for reloading the risers at the end.  The chorus actually did some quick runs of their songs during the light mist. 

Fairfax County Supervisor, Rodney Lusk, from the Franconia District, welcomed the audience and Terry Reynolds added details about the two ensembles.  Metro Voices started the show with five songs, then the Harmonizers sang five songs and then the combined chorus got the audience all excited with “Hey Jude” and “I’m Still Standing.”  The audience singalong was fun for all.

Samantha Tramack and Tony Colosimo were directors for the show and both thanked the audience for being there.  Many fans brought lawn chairs and there were some families who were having some food.  Lots of kids were there too.

There was also a plug or two for our fall show in September, and for the launching of the Capital Force youth chorus.  Members had flyers for that to share with anyone interested.

This week, on July 30, the AACC singers gathered at Market Square to warm up for the annual summer walk-and-sing in Old Town Alexandria.  Members wore their AACC black t-shirts. Jason Lee did warm ups for this week. Metro Voices sang “Fight Song” and “Happy Together” at each stop along King Street.  The Harmonizers sang “New York, New York” and “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” The combined ensembles sang “Hey Jude” and “I’m Still Standing.” Terry Reynolds and Samantha Tramack directed the songs. 

Great to have Chuck Hunter visiting this week plus Jim Kirkland and Aaron Simoneau, plus recent guests Daniel, Josh and Carl. 

Membership director, Jacob Broude, passed out flyers during the walk to promote the launch of Capital Force and to invite prospective singers to a chapter guest night.

The singers ended the evening at a local spot in Old Town Alexandria for an afterglow.
