Looking Back on the Nov. 10^th Chapter Meeting; Tag-a-Thon; Veterans’ Day

First – a report about the Tag-a-Thon that was held on Saturday, Nov. 7^th at First Baptist Church following our all-sectionals rehearsal in the morning.  Calvin Schnure coordinated the event and here is his report: 

Seventeen Harmonizers joined their voices in song on Saturday at the First Annual Harmonizer Tag-a-Thon. Singing in literally dozens of quartet combinations, the men mixed it up on all voice parts (including at least one mixed voice quartet) and performed dozens of tags, for fun and prizes. Participating: Andrew Havens, Tom Jackson, Tim Buell, Scipio Garling, Todd Ryktarsyk, Elizabeth Ryktarsyk, Josh Roots, Rick Savage, Joel Golden, Kevin Kaiser, Clyde Crusenberry, Jack Pitzer, Tony Colosimo, Bill Colosimo, Eric Wallen, Mike Wallen, Steve White, Mick Stamps. (Tony, who was warming up in DC for a matinee quartet gig, participated remotely by singing a tag with Eric, Mike and Bill.)

 

Award winners included:

Most Different Tags Performed: Tom Jackson (24 different tags, at least)

 

Most Tags Performed on All Four Voice Parts: Tim Buell (five tags on all four parts). Runner up, Calvin Schnure (four tags on all four parts)

 

Most Men Performed With: Scipio Garling

The sectional rehearsal on Sat. morning Nov. 7 also at First Baptist was a useful one for singers preparing for the holiday show.  Associate director Tony Colosimo started the work session with warm ups and work on “Mary Had a Baby.”  The section leaders met with their men then til noon in the various rehearsal rooms in the music suite in the church.

The singout on Sunday at the foot of King Street at the Yacht Club was a success and fun.  About 25 guys were there to sing a couple times for those folks present to help raise money for a Wounded Warrior project.  Chorus members actually paid to enter but we got food and some time to relax between appearances.  We sang for lots of military men and their friends.  They were an enthusiastic audience.  Hopefully there will be pay off as they come hear us or hire us.  Terry did the warm ups and was emcee; and Tony directed both shows. Community service guy, Clyde Crusenberry, coordinated the gig.  AHI board member Liz Birnbaum met with the new mayor of Alexandria who was present.

The two Veterans’ Day events were great too.  The first one, at Oakton Elementary, was for over 850 students and all their military guests. About 25 singers were there. Assistant director Terry did the warm ups and was our maestro. Greg Tepe was there to coordinate details with the school staff.  We had a shock during our performance when Bob Blair suffered a seizure or something that took him to the floor.  The staff in the school, several medical folks in the audience, and the quick-to-arrive rescue squad handled our brother well.  And after a stop in Inova Fairfax hospital, he was home that nite to rest and prepare to see his doctor next week!! Thanks to all the men who stepped up to load the truck and get it back to its parking spot.

Several of us did take advantage of the Veterans’ Day free lunch at Applebee’s in Falls Church.

The evening performance was at George Washington Middle School on Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria. Our own Casey Belzer is the director of music and he invited us to sing on their school Veterans’ Day Concert as a surprise guest.  His various choruses sang well and were enthusiastic.  Then we appeared at the end of the show singing “Lullaby” and “Sweet Caroline.” The students went wild!  And so did their folks and families.  About 25 guys made it to this show too.  Terry was our director again. Thanks to him for his long day’s work.

The Tuesday, Nov. 10^th chapter meeting was a busy one in preparation for the holiday show – on the music, on new show uniform sweatshirts and scarves, on sign-ups for holiday special appearances and on the usual chapter nite matters such as getting your picture taken by Ike Evans for the member photo board and getting White House Ornaments from Sandy Stamps to sell.

Tony did the warm ups and was our director for the nite. During the chapter meeting period, we learned that TBD is appearing on the “Word of Mouth” invitational a cappella event.

Tom Jackson reported on the successful open heart surgery for Jim Clancy this week.

Congrats to Steve Szyszke for his participation in the Ukrainian Bandvrist Chorus at Lisner over the past weekend.  It was great to see Gary Mankin in the hall – and he renewed his membership!

President Terry asked if anyone knows what happened to the nice table cover we used for display events.

Secretary Chris Buechler recognized the following membership renewals: Reed Livergood for 5 years; Shawn Tallant for 9 years; Chris Yates for 16 years; and Drew Fuller for 26 years.

Thanks to those who have remembered to chip in for the coffee break goodies – and for those who have brought contributions of goodies too. Always great to get them.

Dick Hall shared this story on Tuesday, the eve of Veteran’s Day, after he used a bell to get the guys back to the risers after break:  “I called the Harmonizers back to the risers after the break tonite by ringing a bell.  When I was chapter program vp (formerly the title for ops vp), I used a bell like it to call the guys to the risers before rehearsal and at break.  Not the bell I used tonight, but this bell has a story behind it.  This is the story:

When my mom was 12 years old, she and her Grandpa (my great-grandpa) were in the field pulling corn.  When grandma came running out of the house ringing her dinner bell, and hollering ‘Pa come on in, come on in – the War is over.’ Grandpa unhitched the mules and took them to the barn, hitched the horse to the buggy, and went in and cleaned up and changed clothes.  They all got in the buggy and went to town to celebrate the end of the war.  That was  Nov. 11, 1918, the end of the First World War.  This is my great grandma’s dinner bell – it is well over 100 years old.”

Musically our work included time on pronunciation for the Italian passage in “Kyrie” and quartets and octets for “White Christmas.”

In other news, Terry Reynolds, John Santora and Chris Buechler have served as trainers for chapter officers from other chapters in our M-AD.  Chuck Harner is coordinator of the district’s leadership academy programs that are held in the fall and early winter in the northern, southern and central parts of the district.

Looking Back on the Nov. 3^rd Chapter Meeting

Bob Blair and his crew had the risers in place and the hall set up at the First Baptist Church before the riser call came and Reed Livergood started the warm-up.  Director Joe Cerutti went right to work on holiday songs the chorus has not sung since last year, and then split the chorus into two groups for sectional work on “Kyrie” and “This Little Light.”

Todd Ryktarsyk kept the business meeting moving, making sure the important issues were discussed and announcements made.

Randall Eliason put a plug in for the Silent Auction, explained the items needed and encouraged everyone to get out and ask for gift certificates from restaurants, movies, and other local businesses.  PresidentTerry Reynolds brought greetings from Chuck Hunter, who is enjoying his assignment in Istanbul, but looking forward to a move next year that might bring him back to our area. 

Clyde Crusenberry reminded the chorus of the opportunity this Sunday, November 8 to help the Old Dominion Boat Club raise funds for the Wounded Warriors.  More singers are needed at this great venue in our backyard.  Look for more details in a separate email. 

Also, plan on being a part of this year’s Veteran’s Day tribute at the Oakton Elementary School on the morning of Wednesday, November 11, always a rewarding experience.  Also on November 11, in the evening, we have a performance in Alexandria at the George Washington Middle School.  New Harmonizer Casey Belzer, a music teacher there, has organized a Veterans Day program within the school auditorium and he has asked for Harmonizer help.

Membership vp Rich Hewitt gave an update on Jack Stonesifer and applicant Larry Dennis, who have both been under doctor’s care, but are hoping to be back with us soon.  Steve Spar was introduced as the newest member of the bass section. 

After break, we came together for more work on the holiday songs.  We made great progress on these songs, but imagine how they will sound after our sectional rehearsal this Saturday, November 8 at the First Baptist Church!  It’s not too late to get those pledges and plan for an hour or two of tag singing, while helping the chapter on Saturday, immediately after the rehearsal, at our first Tag-A-Thon.

Looking Back on the 2015 Fall District Contest in Ocean City Oct 23-24

This year’s fall contest weekend was back in Ocean City MD. The Harmonizers were well prepared and won their 26th M-AD chorus championship with a great 90.9 score.

We had 97 men on the risers and we sang “Someone Like You” arranged by Steve Tramack and “Me Ol’ Bamboo” arranged by Clay Hine. The music team had prepared us well and we had all worked hard to achieve these high marks – Joe Cerutti, director; Tony Colosimo, associate director; Carlos Barillo, choreographer; Chuck McKeever, riser coach; and Steve White, music and performance vp. Plus there are the assistant directors, visual team members, and section leaders.

We also had four Alexandria quartets in the semi finals on Friday nite:  FORECAST with Mike Fitch, Tyler Rackley, Travis Murray, Dan Cook ranked 4^th; HERSHEY TRANSIT COMPANY with Bill Keet, Pookie Dingle, Frank Resek, Steven Matuszewski ranked 8th; YOUTH RECLAMATION PROJECT with Mike Wallen, Roger Tarpey, Hardman Jones, Vic Owen ranked 9th; and BRAVADO with Doug White, Kevin McKenzie, Chris Odell, Todd Ryktarsyk ranked 17^th. And on Saturday night at the Show of Champions, LAST MEN STANDING with TJ Barranger. Drew Feyrer, Ed Bell, Mike Kelly sang their swan song as the outgoing M-AD Champion.

This year’s quartet champ features former Harmonizer, Scott Disney, in ROUTE 1.

Also joining in the crowning of the new M-AD quartet champion will be the M-AD Association of Quartet Champions (MADAQC) chorus with many Harmonizers representing the 19 quartet champs from our chapter (see page 35 of the chapter directory).

 

The Harmonizers appeared on the Saturday nite Jamboree as new district champs and presented songs from our American Icon CD - “America” and “Lullaby.”  We actually wore the contest attire for the show. Joe spoke to the audience about our pride to represent the district at International.  He saluted the other top choruses who will be joining us.  And he spoke of former director John Hohl and announced that we wished to dedicate “Lullaby” to John.

Sales for the CDs went great at our booth in the lobby all weekend. Several guys chipped in and helped sell. The ad on the jumbotron was good too.  And we had a great ad in the printed program about our 2015 holiday show.  

A special surprise on Saturday during the chorus contest was the induction of two more Harmonizers into the M-AD Hall of Honor – Terry Reynolds and Mike Kelly.  They join 20 other chapter members in this group.

 

The chorus championship entitles us to go to the International contest in Nashville in July 2016. Hell’s Kitchen, NY, Voices of Gotham, ranked 2^nd in the chorus contest. The new Hershey, PA, Parkside Harmony, directed by former Harmonizers Jay Butterfield and Sean Devine, ranked 3^rd. The Hamilton Square, NJ, The Brothers in Harmony, ranked 4^th.

As usual the chapter was well organized for the weekend.  Most men and many families and friends drove up on Friday and everyone seemed to manage the huge traffic delay when an accident closed the Bay Bridge for a few hours.  We had our first gathering on Saturday morning at a Holy Savior Catholic Church, which we have used in other years when in OC.  Our great front row met early there to button down their routines.  The chorus arrived at 9. Then Tony, Carlos and Joe worked hard to get us in the groove.

The chorus contest actually started at 8:30 am but our FRIENDS IN HARMONY came to the church to cheer for us and presented each man on the risers with a memento. Robyn Murane came with us to the ready room with her trusty needle and thread to fix or adjust uniforms as needed.

As is our tradition, Joe asked to see the hands of the guys who are singing with us for their first district contest – YeEd thinks there were five.

Shawn Tallant gets a large thank you from the chapter members for finding us a hotel that would open up on this weekend.  The Harmo truck drivers got everything to OC including the props we used as part of the contest package.

Actually there were a lot of non-singing current members at the convention – several sang with other choruses on Saturday or directed other choruses. As usual we had many guys in leadership and operations positions to run the district and the convention. Dennis Ritchey was emcee for the Friday nite contest session and is the executive vice president for M-AD. Special forces guys for this contest were Mike Geipel, Mike Fasano and Bill Conway.

Looking Back on the Oct 27^th Chapter Meeting

Thanks to the work of the early arriving volunteers, the risers, tables, chairs and displays were in place as Harmonizers began making their way to the risers Tuesday night. Featured prominently on the front table was the Mid Atlantic District Chorus championship trophy, already engraved with the chapter’s name by Ship’s Hatch, Inc., as a congratulatory token of our having won the chorus champion title for the 26^th time. At 7 pm, associate director Tony Colosimo did the warm up, then took a few minutes to congratulate the chorus on the awesome performance that earned us the district championship. Our score was our second highest district score since 1997, and represented the greatest increase in average scores from international to district contest. He told us how proud he was of the chorus and gave special congratulations to the initial group of singers enrolled in the certified singers program.

Tony then taught us the first half of a new tag for Rejoice a.k.a. “Emanuel Shall Come to Thee.” Director Joe Cerutti asked us to be ready to sing the whole tag next week and later sent out the chart by email. Joe also praised the work ethic and quality improvements in the rehearsals leading up to the contest, especially the all day Saturday rehearsal.

Feedback from the judges was every helpful, and Joe singled out one common message: the chorus must take more individual responsibility to achieve unity in sound and visual presentation. He promised more work in quartets and duets to lock in 100% accuracy on notes and words. He challenged us to hold ourselves to a higher standard, starting with the holiday music, followed in quick succession by the special spring performance and the international contest. He us led through sections of the new songs for the holiday show.

Todd Ryktarsyk conducted the business meeting. Steve White called Mike Kelly to the front to be recognized as one of three new members inducted into the Mid-Atlantic District Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Mike and to Terry Reynolds, another Hall of Fame inductee who was recognized at a chapter gathering in Ocean City.

Don Dillingham announced plans for this year’s Silent Auction. With our new venue, more limited space, and two shows instead of three, we are having a somewhat scaled-down effort this year. For starters, we will not be doing the on-line auction, only the live auction at the actual shows. We are also trying to focus on quality, rather than quantity. In particular, we want to focus on getting things like gift cards and gift certificates from restaurants, jewelers, and other merchants who are interested in supporting us. These are extremely easy to sell and frequently bring in bids close to their face value. Certificates for other high-end items are also great, and artwork is usually good as well. But given our space constraints, we will steer away from very large items that take up a lot of room, and from used, personal household items that are not as easy to sell (the "garage sale" stuff). Time for us to go out and get gift cards from merchants that we frequent. Or send an email to your favorite jeweler, restaurant, hair salon, spa, or any other business that you (or your significant other) think might be willing to support us. Donations can be given to Don Dillingham or Randall Eliason on any Tuesday night.

Josh Roots, Calvin Schnure and Liz Birnbaum showed us how important, how easy and how much fun we will have getting pledges and singing tags at the TAG-A-THON on November 7 from 1-3 PM, immediately following the All-Sectional rehearsal. Now is the time to ask friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family for a donation. Lots of prizes will be offered, so pick up a pledge form and clear your calendar.

Clyde Crusenberry reminded guys of the November 8 performance at the Old Dominion Boat Club in support of the Wounded Warriors. We are in need of 10-15 more guys for this performance. Since no guests were present, MVP Rich Hewitt welcomed Tim Cash (bass) and Art Medici (Lead) to the risers for the first time as chapter members!

We were called back to the risers after break with the video of our district championship performance. Mike Kelly explained how each of us can download and enjoy this and previous district performances by going to www.midatlanticdistrict.com, clicking on Members Login, entering our BHS member number and password, then clicking on the link named “Download your contest videos here”, and downloading and saving it to our computer. Do not try to play it directly from the website because the file is too big.

The rest of the rehearsal was devoted to holiday show music. These songs are already sounding great. What a great show this promises to be. At 10 pm, Carl Kaufman directed “Keep the Whole World Singing” and several guys went to LaPortas after returning the hall to the condition we found it in. REMEMBER, next Tuesday, rehearsal will be at First Baptist church, because of the election.

Looking Back on the Retreat Oct. 17^th and the Oct 20^th Chapter Meeting

The chorus had an all-day retreat on Sat. Oct. 17^th at John Calvin Presbyterian Church on Columbia Pike from 9 -5.  Cindy Hansen was with us for the day to help us prepare for the fall chorus contest.  It was great to have her help us grow and improve even more and to add to what Carlos and the rest of the music team have been teaching us.

The chapter provided coffee and donuts for the early arrivals. Thanks to Steve White, Jack Pitzer and Kevin Kaiser for getting this organized.  As usual, Bob Blair and crew helped get the risers, sound equipment and stage props moved to the church early that day too.

The music team worked with Cindy to help make the day profitable. Great to have so many special forces guys with us for the retreat too.

President Terry Reynolds took time after lunch to review the results of the recent chapter member survey created by him and membership vp Rich Hewitt.  Response numbers were strong – 122 guys gave input.  The results were not too surprising but reinforced areas of improvement for chapter leaders in both admin and music.

We had fun learning the tag to “Mary Had a Baby” too which will we will sing on the holiday show.

On Tuesday nite, we worked hard and it was extra warm in the building!!  Something about the heat turned on. Luckily we own a bunch of fans that help a little.

Reed Livergood did the warm ups this week and got us ready for director Joe Cerutti to get right to work. We started on three of the new holiday songs after more time on the tag of “Mary Had a Baby.”

Then we worked on the contest package.  Choreographer Carlos Barillo and associate director Tony Colosimo helped Joe coach and encourage the chorus as we prepare for the fall contest.

Before our meeting started, Carlos and Chuck McKeever several new guys who will be singing on Saturday.

 Operations vp Todd Ryktarsyk conducted the business session as usual.

Fall convention coordinator Shawn Tallant reminded us to check the contest weekend handbook previously issued electronically.  Key points:  riser crew early 8 am, then front row at 8:30 and chorus at 9 am at the Holy Savior Catholic Church on 17^th Street; and bring two uniforms – the steam punk outfits from Pittsburgh and the black suit with special shirt, tie and stuffer from Toronto. Also bring your most recent medal. Bring water bottles to church.  Chorus will be released at 11 to go change and eat and get to the convention center.

Note that tickets can be picked up at a will call desk.  Friday nite’s        quartet contest starts at 5:30 pm.

YeEd suggests you should wear any Harmo gear on Friday nite while we cheer on the quartet guys from our chapter – Mike Wallen, Dan Cook, Pookie Dingle and the BRAVADO guys Doug White, Kevin McKenzie, Chris Odell and Todd Ryktarsyk.

Music vp Steve White reminded us of the Nov. 7 all-sections rehearsal at First Baptist on King Street at 9 am.  Josh Roots spoke about the Tag-a-Thon that will follow that rehearsal.  Joe plugged this idea as he wrapped up the rehearsal tonite.  Josh  mentioned there will be prizes for the most tags sung, the most money raised and such.

Steve also alerted us that the Nov. 10^th meeting will be a recording session at First Baptist.  Members are asked to bring chunks of carpet and packing blankets to use on the floor to swallow sound.

Ike Evans is taking mug shots of new guys for the Harmo picture board (and also offering to take pixs of guys who want theirs updated).

The show will feature the “reunion performance” of LAST KIDS PICKED coming out of a six-year “retirement” exclusively for this special event! In addition, it will feature HALF & HALF, MAD’s new “Mixed Quartet Champions” with their special blend of great singing and fun!

President Terry Reynolds alerted the board of their meeting on Wednesday nite.  The new and old boards for 2015 and 2016 are having the annual board retreat Oct. 31^st.

After a good break, we worked more on holiday music.  Then back to contest work.

In other news, the Fairfax Chapter held its annual golf tournament on Thursday Oct. 15 2015.. The Harmonizers were well represented. A team of Vince Cazenas; Glenn Williamson, former Harmonizer; Norm Richards and Bruce Stephens won the tournament at the Osprey Golf Course, with 10 under par. Fairfax and the Heritage singers shot even par. Vince says, “They mentioned that they were not inviting us back for next year! They were just joking!” Congrats to our team.

Looking Back on the Oct 13^th Chapter Meeting

This week was a work session indeed.  Director Joe Cerutti and choreographer Carlos Barillo were in Nashville at BHS headquarters for a staff meeting.  That left associate director Tony Colosimo in charge along with assistant directors Terry Reynolds and Mike Kelly.  And we worked hard.

Tony did the warm up session after the set up crews worked hard and front row did reviews on the stage with Peelee Clark coaching them.

Tony took a minute to explain the work he is doing to create and implement the Certified Singer Program (CSP).  About 20 guys have been taken thru the assessment and self-improvement phases.  All have made progress.  The musical leaders are pleased to discover how the program helps them prepare for their musical leadership too. Tony thanked Dean Rust for his terrific attention to detail and coordination to make it work so well. 

While Tony left the main hall to work on the CSP, Terry and Mike helped work on some of the great new holiday arrangements.

Tony returned up front and we concentrated on the contest package. We incorporated the notes Carlos had sent to all the members before he left for Nashville.  And we incorporated the points that Joe and Tony wanted reviewed too.

This was also the week for the annual meeting of the Alexandria Chapter of BHS and current president Terry Reynolds called the meeting to order.  Nominating committee chairman Alan Wile reported the slate that had been sent to all members well in advance.  Secretary Buechler declared no other nominations had been received.  The chapter voted in acclamation to elect the 2016 slate: Randall Eliason, president; Terry Reynolds immediate past president; Chris Buechler, secretary; Al Herman, treasurer; and Mike Edison, Kevin McKenzie and Steve White as at-large members for  membership, marketing and music.

Terry reported that Alexandria Harmonizers Inc. board met last week and elected Ken Fess as president and Clyde Crusenberry as vice president of the new 501©3 board.

Operations vp Todd Ryktarsyk conducted the business meeting portion of our weekly meeting. Josh Roots plugged participation and sign-up for pledges for the Tag-A-Thon that will be held on Nov7th following the all sectionals rehearsal at First Baptist Church that day.

Shawn Tallant invited questions regarding fall contest arrangements for the members.  He mentioned that there was still a room or two at our hotel.

Mike Edison invited Harmonizers to come to the Germantown chapter show on Sat nite Oct. 17^th. He has tickets.

Secretary Chris presented membership renewal cards to Matt Doniger for 3 years; Antony Takahaski for 13 years; Josh Roots for 17 years; Randall Eliason for 20 years (plus a lapel pin); Phil Ashford for 38 years; and John Santora for 39 years.

President Terry Reynolds reports that Jean Wachter is back in the hospital fighting an infection. Gary Mankin is home from the hospital.

Bruce Lauther reports on several members of the Harmonizer family who have faced health challenges lately.  He visited with Terry Jordan and delivered one of the large cards Bruce had the chapter sign recently. Terry still suffers from his fractured foot but hopes he can make it to the M-AD District Convention.

Ross Johnson is rebounding from his wellness issues. He and Susan enjoyed another of the cards signed by the Harmonizers. Burt Stueve will be extended at Fairfax Rehab Center with a recent discovery of pneumonia complications. Austin and Sue Cotton continue pretty much as before. Clyde Crusenberry is rebounding nicely from his serious leg infection and enjoyed his card from the chapter.

Terry also reports hearing from Alan Kousen who has been working in New England recently, “I'll be in New England until November. Also singing with a new quartet at NED contest in two weeks - NEW ENGLAND CHORD COMPANY.”

Big news for all who plan ahead – the fall M-AD contest will be Sept 16-17 in 2016 in Lancaster, PA.  Mark your’16 calendar to reflect that recently announced change.

Terry and membership vp Rich Hewitt also thanked all those who responded to the membership survey conducted recently. Good response rates will provide better information for the chapter leadership.

Rich welcomed a line of guests and prospective members.

We all know it is time for the 2015 Mid-Atlantic Fall District Contests., Fri Oct 23 & Sat Oct 24 at Ocean City MD Convention Center.

 

In the flurry over the chorus contest on Saturday, don't forget to support these Alexandria quartets at the quartet semi finals on Friday afternoon starting at 5:27 pm:  YOUTH RECLAMATION PROJECT with Mike Wallen, Roger Tarpey, Hardman Jones, Vic Owen singing 5^th; HERSHEY TRANSIT COMPANY with Bill Keet, Pookie Dingle, Frank Resek, Steven Matuszewski singing 9^th; BRAVADO with Doug White, Kevin McKenzie, Chris Odell, Todd Ryktarsyk singing 13^th;  and FORECAST with Mike Fitch, Tyler Rackley, Travis Murray, Dan Cook singing 20^th.

 

And on Saturday night at the Show of Champions, LAST MEN STANDING with TJ Barranger. Drew Feyrer, Ed Bell, Mike Kelly will sing their swan song as the outgoing M-AD Champion.

 

Also joining in the crowning of the new M-AD quartet champion will be the M-AD Association of Quartet Champions (MADAQC) chorus with many Harmonizers representing the 19 quartet champs from our chapter (see page 35 of the chapter directory).

 

The chorus took a break and consumed a lot of goodies. Thanks for those who have brought extra goodies lately.  Keep em coming. And thanks to those to chipped in some cash in the can to help cover costs for break food.  Amazing how many guys have to come to chorus right after work and don’t get dinner.  So good to have things to share. (BTW – if you are in Alexandria early, a lot of guys go get some dinner at Hard Times Café over on King Street.  They park at Durant and walk over to eat.)

 

After the break, it was back on to the risers to fire ourselves up on the contest package. Kudos to the front row, the specialforces who have been coming to rehearsals to help us in Ocean City, and to Tony for pushing us all.

 

Music vp Steve White reminded all to plan to get to the chorus retreat at 8:30 am on Sat. Oct. 17 at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 6531 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003. Coffee and donuts promised.  Be on the risers ready to go at 9 am.  Cindy Hansen will be coaching for the day-long event. Looking Back on the Oct 6^th Chapter Meeting

The chorus came to Durant ready to work.  Clearly it is contest time and many guys who are singing with us for the contest but not regularly for other shows were present.  Great to have the help of these Harmonizers.

At 6 pm there was a major front row drill on stage and in front of the risers plus a class for new members to learn the presentation plan for the contest package for some new members.

Director Joe Cerutti was out of town with his SAI chorus, Pride of Baltimore, at their International convention. Associate director Tony Colosimo did the warm ups and was director for the nite.  He was assisted by choreographer, Carlos Barillo, who was just off a plane from Germany where he was coaching.  We worked the first half of the nite on the contest package. Many of the items we worked on were a follow up to work done last week.

Operations vp Todd Ryktarsyk conducted the chapter meeting. Thanks go to Gerry Fuller for helping with the storage unit move recently.  Ike Evans is taking head-shot photos of guys to update the member photo board.  Doug White is still looking to get his chorus shoes back from whoever has the wrong size.

Calvin Schnure promoted the Tag-A-Thon fundraiser that will be Sat Nov. 7^th following the all-sectionals rehearsal at First Baptist Church, 1 pm.   Members are encouraged to get sponsors for their tag singing.

Mike Edison invited Harmonizers to come to the show for the Germantown Chorus.  Harmonizer Kris Zinkievich directs that chorus.  The show is Sat nite Oct 17^th after our retreat in Rockville.  See Mike for tickets.

Secretary Chris Buechler presented a lot of membership renewal cards: Rusty Orvick for 11 years; Ken Henderson for 12 years; Bob Blair for 16 years; Bob Mattes for 17 years; Mike Schwartz for 21 years; Dick Dangel for 23 years; Don Thompson for 23 years; Chuck McKeever for 29 years; Ken Fess for 31 years; Terry Reynolds for 32 years, Bob Ulibarri for 33 years; Mike Kelly for 35 years (and a 35-year lapel pin);  Mick Stamps for 36 years; Jack Cameron for 46 years and Jack Pitzer for 50 years!

President Terry Reynolds reports that Bill Conway is safe and not in a flood situation in SC.

Terry announced a new addition to the chapter’s musical leadership team – Vickie Dennis will join the team and assist with many important projects such as the Youth Harmony effort and the Certified Singer program.  Her husband Dennis is about to become a new member of the chorus. She directed the Houston Tidelanders chorus for three years and the Houston SAI chorus.  Welcome aboard!

Terry thanked the 56 members that responded to the chapter survey. Others are encouraged to do so ASAP.

He reminded us that the official chapter election for the BHS chapter is next week. His other reminders include: the all-day retreat on Sat. Oct. 17^th at John Calvin Presbyterian Church on Columbia Pike with Cindy Hansen coaching; music for the April 2016 show will be available soon; if you want one of the older Harmonizer CDs, you should buy them now because we won’t be reordering.

Great to have some guys come sing for the nite: Geoff Berman, David Jarzen who is in the midst of another show at West Potomac, and former member Jack Stonesifer.

Membership vp Rich Hewitt welcomed a good group of guests and welcomed two new members who have completed their attendance requirement: Casey Belzer and Jordan Haedtler.

Looking Back on the Sept 29^th Chapter Meeting and Show Sept 26th

The chorus did a performance on Sat nite Sept 26^th at the Asbury Methodist Village.  We were hosted by former Harmonizer Hal Gaut and his family.  Assistant directors Terry Reynolds and Mike Kelly were up front as directors for this show.  Bruce Lauther was the main contact for this paid performance.  We sang all of the songs from the Icon show and many songs from our patriotic package; and we sang “A Place on the Risers for You” in honor of a recently deceased resident of the Village who was a Sweet Adeline singer.  We wore our black suits. Shows producer Greg Tepe sent out a long thank you list to the many guys who had an extra task in making it a success including ensembles that sang and soloists with the chorus.

Tuesday nite was another busy one for the chapter – although the rainy weather was awful and caused huge delays for many members including director Joe Cerutti.  We delayed the start of the rehearsal a bit and listened to the new holiday songs.  Assistant director Terry Reynolds did the vocal warm ups.

Operations vp Todd Ryktarsyk and Bob Blair seemed to prompt the set up work for the nite.  Chuck McKeever met with several newer members who are planning to sing in the contest this fall. Sandy Stamps had a large supply of White House Ornaments for guys to take to sell.

For the first half of the nite, two parts remained on the risers to work on the contest set and the other two parts worked in other rooms on the holiday songs.  Then we switched.

Todd conducted the chapter meeting.  Calvin Schnure announced plans for a Tag-A-Thon on Sat. Nov. 7^th after the all-sectionals.  It is meant to be a fund raising event.

President Terry Reynolds reported on the memorial service in Florida for John Hohl including details of the quartet that included he and Joe to sing “A Place on the Risers for You.”

Terry launched sign ups for those who wanna get tickets for the April 2016 performance at Strathmore.

He reminded us all about the retreat on Sat. Oct 17 at John Calvin Presbyterian Church on Columbia Pike starting at 9 and going for the day.

Show vp Nick Leiserson reviewed a long list of thank you messages for Harmonizer family who made the Icon show a success especially Carlos and Joe who encouraged the chapter to launch a new kinda show.  Nick also thanked Greg for his work on the Asbury Methodist Village show as well as Bruce for setting up the show.

Todd thanked Bob Blair, Bob Rhome, Carl Kauffmann and Gerry Fuller who helped him moved all of our storage materials from one locker to another that costs less.  Their work saved over $2000.

Todd also reminded everyone to drop in a donation in the coffee room each week during break.

Membership vp Rich Hewitt welcomed more guests and the men who attended the Open Audition and are on their way to full membership.

The Nominating Committee will present the following named members for election as officers of the 2016 Alexandria, VA Chapter Board of Directors at the chapter business meeting on October 13, 2015:

Looking Back on the Sept. 19^th American Icon shows at Schlesinger Hall

The energy was electric this past Saturday, the chorus sounded GREAT, and audience loved every minute of it. Well done, all! We have accomplished an amazing feat this past spring/summer in learning so many new songs and presenting them at a high level. There were 97 men on stage this past weekend for the 2 pm and 8 pm shows at Schlesinger Hall on the NOVA campus in Alexandria.

Congrats to Carlos Barillo who created the show idea and helped director Joe Cerutti and the music team pick the songs.  He also created the popular choreography and was show producer.

The audience responses were great! Chuck Hunter sent word of congrats from Istanbul to all.

According to chapter historian Martin Banks, the Harmonizer appearance at Schlesinger was a return to that venue after an 11-year hiatus.  Schlesinger was opened in 2001 to the relief of the Harmonizers who had trouble finding a suitable venue for formal shows within the Alexandria city limits after losing their traditional annual spring and fall show home at TC Williams HS (the old building).  We produced six annual shows at Schlesinger from fall 2001 to spring 2004 until overcome by scheduling issues.  This return to the venue marks a renewed chapter emphasis on service and engagement within our home community.  (A footnote:  the 2002 Spring Tonic honored Scott Werner on the eve of his retirement after almost 30 years as musical director. A theater seat was dedicated to Scott and his wife Linda (many of us found the plaque on Saturday).  VAUDEVILLE came from retirement to be part of the show and afterglow.  This was probably John Hohl’s last performance on stage with the Harmonizers.)

The show day on Sept 19^th began with a beehive of activity with guys arriving with all their uniform parts.  We wore two uniforms for this show – black tux and black suit.  We did change ties in the middle of the second half to the red/white/blue striped tie for the finale.  Many of the men were at this hall for the first time and had to discover the dressing room spaces in the hall. Most brought some kinda lunch for the day.

The FRIENDS IN HARMONY and many non-singing Harmonizers helped haul in supplies to use in the lobby such as snacks and coffee and wine to sell to the audiences. Some of us helped fold the printed programs.  Others set up the box office operation which apparently went well as we heard no complaints from customers. Keith Jones and Bruce Minnick sold our CDs in the lobby including our newly released CD of the American Icon songs.  The new one sells for $10.

Thanks too for the riser crews for the weekend.

The staff at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Art Center were very helpful as well.

Our special performance guest was Wes Crawford who was our drummer for many of the songs and played behind the risers with Joe keeping him in his sight line. Our guest quartet was DA CAPO with Ryan Griffith, Tony Colosimo, Joe Sawyer with Kirk Young as their bass.

Our chapter quartet BRAVADO with Doug White, Kevin McKenzie, Chris Odell and Todd Ryktarsyk sang several parts of songs with the chorus,.

Michael Jackson – “Man in the Mirror” sung by a VLQ from the chapter and “Thriller” arranged by Dan Naumann sung by the chorus with full stage choreography

Billy Joel – “For the Longest Time” sung by TBD and “Lullaby” arranged by Kirk Young and sung by the chorus

Stevie Wonder – “Isn’t She Lovely” sung by DA CAPO

Neil Diamond – “America” arranged by Steve Tramack, and “Sweet Caroline” arranged by Dylan Oxford, both sung by the chorus, with audience sing-a-long too

Saturday morning the basses met in the lobby to kick off their day and the chapter’s a cappella group, TBD,  met on stage with their director, Reed Livergood,  to finalize their performance details. Members of TBD include Clark Chesser, Josh DesPortes, Scipio Garling, Kellen Hertz, Troy Hillier, Nick Leiserson, Reed, Josh Roots, Todd Ryktarsyk, Noah Van Gilder and Spencer Wight.

Before the 2 pm show, the chorus assembled in a conference room, dressed in our uniforms, for last minute details. President Terry Reynolds introduced our newest board member for the Alexandria Harmonizers Inc. board – Julie Rizzo. Welcome to the Harmo family.

This weekend’s show was the first show performance for Jeff Burkey, Rich Payton, Nathan Vomocil, John Smith, Tom Jackson and Gene Swartz.

For this show was also the debuted our electronic song board on stage.  Thanks to Bruce Roehm and the many men who contributed monies to pay for it. Chapter IT chief, Mike Kelly, programmed it and Dave DesPortes operated the remote from the risers to change song prompts.

The huge American flag wowed the crowd for our finale and the projected images for some songs was a great addition too.  The 1950s antique radio was from Lew Klinge’s collection.  Dennis Ritchey and Steve White built the great cemetery props for the presentation of “Thriller.”

Kudos to young Leland, grandson of Brad and Adele Jones, who opened the show mesmerized with listening to the radio instead of doing his home work.

Dennis Ritchey did the emcee duties to invite the audience to come to the holiday show, to buy a CD and for the men to come sing with us.

Keith Jones reports to YeEd there were about 20  Harmonizers who came to hear the show but did not sing this time.  And a host of former members too including Ryan Odell, Craig’s son.
